Mr. Girdhari, a 54-year-old truck driver from Shiv Vihar, Delhi, has spent over thirty years driving long-haul routes across North India to support his family of nine. His job at Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar, one of India’s busiest logistics hubs, was not just a source of income, but his lifeline. He was recently diagnosed with a cataract in his left eye, which clouded the lens and impaired his vision.
For the past two years, Girdhari had been struggling with blurry vision and excessive tearing in his left eye. Over time, the condition worsened, making it difficult for him to read maps on his phone and navigate long truck routes. Blurred images, difficulty in recognizing faces, and an inability to work efficiently took a toll on his life and his family. His reduced earning capacity deeply affected his confidence.
Girdhari’s life took a transformative turn when a fellow driver told him about the SCEH Eicher Driver Care Center at Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar, which provides free eye and ear check-ups for truck drivers to promote safer driving and reduce road accidents. Encouraged by the stories of others, he gathered the courage to visit the center for a primary eye check-up.
He was welcomed by the team and thoroughly examined by skilled vision technician, who gently explained that he had a cataract in his left eye and would need surgery. The news worried him, being a daily wage worker, his livelihood depended entirely on driving; no driving meant no income. After a detailed evaluation, he was referred to Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital in Daryaganj for further treatment.
At the hospital, doctors confirmed the diagnosis. His vision had fallen under the category of severe visual impairment, nearing functional blindness. Within days, Girdhari underwent successful cataract surgery, restoring his vision and dignity.
Back on the Road - And Back to Life: The impact was immediate and profound. The surgery restored Girdhari’s vision and with it, his confidence, independence, and ability to support his family. He returned to the road with a clear view and a renewed purpose.
Thanks to the dedication of the SCEH team and the Eicher Driver Care Programme, my vision has been restored and my life is back on track. I’m deeply grateful for the successful surgery, the compassionate support, and the warmth I received throughout my journey.
