ALLIED OPHTHALMIC PARAMEDICS

In Dr Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital, to meet the deficit of skilled Allied Ophthalmic Paramedics (AOPs) has enrolled 500 cadres of women from bottom of pyramid, to capacitate them to function as ophthalmic assistants since 2014 with significant focus on their holistic development and women empowerment

In India, young women are discriminated and pushed to the fringes of the society as they enter adulthood. In our society, these marginalized girls are often ‘invisible’; not reflected in survey or statistics, and are ‘the forgotten ones,’ almost living at the margin of the society in families. The COP initiative at SCEH has not only created empowered and efficient skilled allied ophthalmic employees but has been able to foster safe and productive work environment for young girls. By supporting young women to stay in training school for two years, SCEH indirectly contribute towards prevention of early marriage and child bearing. The by product of our endeavor is now visible as skilled and efficient empowered young women who have enhanced opportunities for social participation.

The two- year Certified Ophthalmic Paramedics (COP) program or AOP program has gone from strength to strength, building from an indigenous home-grown training program to nationally accepted standard program with a good reputation in the eye care circle. It is certified by Health Sector Skill Council. Fully supported by the management, it has a dedicated infrastructure, well-structured and executed curriculum, expert faculty, foolproof assessment techniques and a student friendly environment.
Recruitment process:
Based on demand, we take students of COP from across all the Centres SCEH operates in. By taking the students from across all the centres, SCEH is trying to meet the deficit of skilled manpower and thereby strengthening the centres. Since the students are from the surrounding areas, the local people are able to identify with them; the students also are aware of the need of local people and therefore they will be able to deal with sensitivity and have greater convincing power. With available resources and space, in each of the Secondary Centre, we are trying to create a small training unit/hub for the COP students.
At SCEH for seeking applications of COPs no vigorous promotion strategy is being adopted so far, they appeared for the interview as a result of pamphlet distribution during Out-reach Camps or word of mouth publicity done by the earlier students. The selection criteria kept is as follows:

  • Age- 18-21 years
  • Education-10+2
  • Girls Preferred

An aptitude test is developed that we administer on students. The question guideline was developed and used for interview. The emphasis is laid on one to one discussion with candidates and their parents. The preference is given to underprivileged section of the society who has lesser career opportunities.
