About Vision Centre

“Addressing Preventable Vision Impairment”

India faces a significant burden of avoidable vision loss, largely due to common but treatable conditions such as uncorrected refractive errors, presbyopia, and cataracts. Early detection and timely intervention at the primary care level are essential to prevent these issues from progressing. At Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital (SCEH), our Vision Centres play a vital role in this effort.

We operate a well-integrated network of 111 Vision Centres, connected to 8 secondary hospitals across Northern India and a tertiary care facility in Delhi. These centres are the backbone of our primary eye care system—delivering essential services directly to communities in both rural regions and urban slums.

These centres are often the first point of contact for people in rural villages and underserved urban areas. Staffed by trained Vision Technicians—typically young local women who have completed school and undergone a rigorous two-year training program— alongside a Community Health Worker, the centres are deeply rooted in the communities they serve.

By identifying vision problems early, managing basic conditions, and referring complex cases to higher-level facilities, our Vision Centres ensure that quality eye care is accessible, affordable, and timely for those who need it most.

Teleophthalmology: Connecting Communities to Expert Care

To enhance diagnostic accuracy and reduce unnecessary referrals, we’ve introduced teleophthalmology at all Vision Centres. Technicians can consult in real-time with ophthalmologists at our centralised call centre , via video calls. The specialist can:

  • Review clinical details
  • Provide a diagnosis
  • Generate an electronic prescription, which is printed at the Vision Centre As a result, nearly 70% of patients are now treated directly at the Vision Centre—minimizing travel, cost, and delays for patients.

Data-Driven Monitoring and Quality Control

We use a proprietary Vision Centre Management System to collect and analyze clinical and programmatic data. This system allows us to:

  • Monitor performance and patient care quality
  • Conduct clinical audits
  • Track trends and optimize service delivery
  • Subsidized glasses
  • Awareness generation for patients eligible under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, especially for surgeries

Primary Care with Advanced Tools:

To make primary eye care more comprehensive and preventive, we’ve added, AI-enabled handheld fundus cameras to detect diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration
