Kayati, a young girl from Sangam Vihar B Block in South Delhi, was born into a family facing severe financial hardships. Her father, a daily laborer working in an export company, struggled to make ends meet, and their limited income left them with little capacity to address unexpected health challenges. At the tender age of 5, Kayati's parents noticed her struggling with vision problems, and both of her eyes had developed a squint. Worried about their daughter’s future, they visited a private hospital. However, the high cost of treatment was overwhelming, and with no affordable options available, they made the difficult decision to stop seeking medical care for Kayati.
In July 2024, a ray of hope appeared when our project team conducted door-to-door eye screenings in their community. During this outreach, Kayati’s condition was identified as a severe squint in both eyes, which required urgent medical attention. She was promptly referred to a nearby Sangam Vihar Vision Center, where she received comprehensive eye examinations and consultations, all provided free of charge through the initiative.
After a detailed evaluation, the medical team concluded that surgery was necessary for both of her eyes to prevent further deterioration and to improve her vision. In September 2024, Kayati underwent surgery on both eyes, a life-changing procedure that restored her vision. Her eyes appeared normal for the first time in years, and her vision was greatly improved.
Her family, who had been enduring both emotional and financial strain, expressed immense gratitude to the hospital and the entire medical team. The support and care provided during this difficult period lifted a heavy burden from their shoulders, giving them renewed hope.
Kayati’s story stands as a testament to the transformative power of accessible healthcare. By reaching out to underserved communities and offering affordable medical care, initiatives like this can change the course of a child's life, giving them the opportunity to live fully and confidently. The impact of Kayati’s successful treatment is not only seen in her restored vision but also in the new sense of optimism it has brought to her family’s future.
Through the dedicated efforts of the SCEH team and the invaluable support from Cognizant Foundation, another young life has been changed for the better. Their continued belief in accessible eye care is helping reshape the future of many children like Kayati.
